Ensure Compliance with Food Safety Standards

The Food Safety Modernization Act, Section 204

The FDA has introduced a new food traceability act focused on more extensive record-keeping to ensure food safety at every step. This new level of traceability requires the ability to track the origins and movements of specific food products throughout the supply chain. The goal is to enhance food transparency, enable the quick removal of contaminated products and build greater consumer trust. Key data elements (KDEs) must be captured and reported to the FDA within 24 hours of a request, including:

  • Product description
  • Source and destination of the product
  • Date of production
  • Lot numbers or batch codes
  • Transportation details

Is your business prepared for these new food safety standards? With the FSMA 204 compliance deadline set for January 20, 2026, FineLine can help you capture and record the necessary product data to meet these requirements while seamlessly integrating into your supply chain.

How does RFID technology benefit food supply chains?

RFID technology is revolutionizing food supply chains by providing real-time tracking and traceability of food products as they move through the supply chain. By leveraging RFID, businesses can ensure compliance with food safety regulations, accurately record and track lot numbers, expirations dates, and other critical data. Here’s an expanded look at how RFID is transforming the food industry:

Enhanced Food Safety

RFID sensors can be used to keep track of expiration dates and monitor environmental conditions of food products throughout the supply chain to ensure that products stay safe for consumption. In the event of a food safety issue, RFID makes it easy to trace and remove affected products from the supply chain to protect consumers and minimize impact.

Food Regulation Compliance

RFID provides the traceability to comply with the recent Food Safety Modernization Act. It allows for critical product data to be captured and recorded efficiently throughout the supply chain. It records in real-time essential data such as product sources, lot numbers, transportation details, and more.

Reduced Food Waste

RFID provides real-time stock data that helps companies better manage their inventory to reduce waste and spoilage by preventing overstocking and ensuring products are used before they expire. Access to critical data captured by RFID, including upcoming expiration dates, ensures perishable items with upcoming expiration dates are used first.

Streamlined Supply Chain

With the help of RFID technology, you can improve supply chain efficiency through real-time tracking. RFID enables quick data capture and automated record-keeping, keeping your operations moving quickly.

Improved Inventory Management

RFID provides greater visibility into inventory levels making it easier for businesses to monitor stock, reduce stockouts, and prevent overstocking. By eliminating labor intensive manual inventory counts, RFID enables automated inventory management that takes place in seconds, while also reducing human error and improving accuracy.

Real-Time Data & Analytics

RFID technology enables real-time tracking of food products throughout the supply chain, ensuring traceability at every step. It can provide food companies with data on product movement, deliveries, transportation conditions, expiration dates and inventory levels to enable better decision making.

Industry Partnerships

GS1

FineLine has partnered with GS1 to provide solutions and services that support the implementation of GS1 standards across industries and applications and serve as a resource for businesses seeking assistance with implementing GS1 standards, barcode labeling, RFID tagging, electronic data interchange (EDI), data synchronization, and other aspects of supply chain management. Solution Partners undergo training and certification from GS1 to ensure their expertise and capabilities in delivering solutions that comply with GS1 standards and best practices.

GS1 - EPC

FineLine UHF RFID products follow GS1 Consumer Privacy Guidelines. The EPC symbol is designed to indicate that a RAIN RFID tag has been encoded in compliance with GS1’s EPC Tag Data Standard (TDS) using GS1’s EPC UHF Gen2 Air Interface Protocol for interrogator/tag communications.

ISO/IEC 29160

ISO/IEC 29160 specifies the design and use of the RFID Emblem to identify products, product packaging, transport units, returnable transport items, and freight containers employing RF tags. The symbol indicates the presence of the RFID tag incorporated within the packaging, container, or equipment without identifying the specific air interface or data structure employed.

Auburn University RFID Lab

FineLine supports and collaborates with Auburn RFID Lab ARC program to meet and exceed levels of performance and quality necessary to provide ROI benefits to the end users.

FineLine actively supports ALEC submission and validation programs to help suppliers ensure that their RFID-tagged item meets all the industry requirements.

RAIN™ Alliance

FineLine is an active member of RAIN RFID, a global alliance promoting the universal adoption of UHF RFID technology. RAIN uses the GS1 UHF Gen2 protocol which ISO/IEC has standardized as 18000-63. The word RAIN—an acronym derived from RAdio frequency IdentificatioN—is intended as a nod to the link between UHF RFID and the cloud, where RFID-based data can be stored, managed and shared via the Internet. A RAIN RFID solution uses a reader to read and write a tagged item, manage the data and take action.
