With the steady increase of RFID adoption in the retail market, many retailers are requiring their suppliers to submit RFID label samples to the Auburn University RFID Lab for validation. This validation process is to ensure that RFID tags are being encoded correctly and placed on items in a location that allows the RFID technology to function at its best. Without tag validation and standards, the implementation of RFID in retail can be compromised.

If your retailer requires you to implement RFID and submit samples to the Auburn University RFID Lab, consider the following:

Before Submitting:

Your retailer should provide you with documentation for their RFID tagging requirements. It is a good idea to review this document and contact your retailer if you have any questions.

There are several items you will need to acquire before submitting to the lab for testing, including:

• Five production-ready RFID tags.

• A copy of your submission form or submission confirmation.

• Your vendor ID (Confirm your vendor ID with your retailer).

• A minimum of six photos showing the tagging location on your product packaging.

• A list of all the SKUs you are associating with a submission. They must be similar types of products and packaging.

These items are required to submit tags to the Auburn University RFID Lab. For a smooth submission and pass on your first attempt, it is best to review your retailer’s documentation. Additionally, be sure to thoroughly review your submission before finalizing it.

After Submitting:

Keep track of your submission numbers and approvals. If you want to change a previously approved submission, you will need this information. Changes can include adding new SKUs to an existing submission, adding a new RFID inlay model, changing a tagging location on your packaging, or adding a submission for a new retailer. When following up with the RFID Lab, the submission and approval numbers are required to receive a timely and accurate response from the lab.
